Photographs of North Haven and Vinalhaven Islands in Penobscot Bay, made in 1960 It was a gracious mixture of farmers and fishermen, on the one hand, and "summer people" on the other, who spent the summer trying not to look like the university presidents, corporate magnates, and country club ladies they were. They came mostly to not meet their like, and when they did, fell only reluctantly into conversation, like the two women outside the store in Vinalhaven. I hope relations there are still cordial, and the spaces unimproved.
